Die by Die packs all the fun, magic - and sometimes mayhem - of a quality TTRPG session into a simple, pick-up-and-play, video game format!
"Orcs and goblins raid the outskirts of the kingdom, roads are patrolled by bandits and thieves, there are rumors of a vampire hive on the slopes - and worse, that their leader walks amongst the nobility in The Capital - The High-King of the Dwarves is investigating an assassination in the Blue City, the Elven inquisition are emboldened to seek retribution after the defilement of the Ivory Temple, and a chapter of clerics rides at dawn to cleanse a town of a mysterious plague.
A pure hearted party of heroes could restore order here, or a band of nerdowells could take advantage and find their fortune. Which will you be?"
Die by Die packs all the fun, magic - and sometimes mayhem - of a quality TTRPG session into a simple, pick-up-and-play, video game format! Using a combination of a roguelike structure and a text adventure interface, this game is designed to create short, pulpy, adventure stories to play solo or with friends. Every playthrough is a different tale. The dice of fate will choose your setting, structure and plot points, but your actions and your dice rolls will tell the story. Will you survive as a hero and create your story, die by die? Or will you roll poorly and die by die?
Game play overview:
Die by Die is a text based dice rolling game that uses a roguelike dungeon crawler framework to simulate the experience of a one shot tabletop rpg session. At the core of the game is an engine that generates stories procedurally in a similar way to a roguelike generating rooms. Players can then select parts of the story to interact with - attack a guard, open a chest etc - and thus alter the story, often rolling a die and adding their stats to determine the outcome. Each playthrough starts with the game master - the computer - rolling dice to determine key elements of the story including the players mission, motivation, and grand prize. Players can, at this point, choose to have everything randomised or take some control over the variables in this playthrough. After this, players take on the adventure scene by scene. In each scene a description is procedurally generated. Players can then interact with specific words in the scene to make alterations to the story. Just like a TTRPG, creative thinking is encouraged, and just like TTRPG some actions require a dice roll, and combat comes down to a crunchy, turn-based, dice rolling system.
