An educational strategy city building game about sustainability.

Our goal is to educate about sustainability. Issues of global sustainability affect us all and will soon become ever more present in our everyday lives. We found that the issue of realizing this threat can often be linked back to education, which is why this game is aimed at schools and schoolchildren specifically. We hope to instill a deep-rooted understanding of the importance of sustainability from an early age.
But how do we reach and engage schoolchildren?
Kids love playing video games. Playing games is generally intrinsically motivated, whereas learning something in school is usually extrinsically motivated. Intrinsic motivation being many times more effective than extrinsic motivation is why many kids prefer playing games over doing their schoolwork.
We want to use this strong, intrinsic motivation to play games to reach players and schoolchildren. Our approach aims to be as close to the customer/player as possible. The game uses a light tone and happy colors, has a fast pace and a nice musical backdrop. We want to implicitly educate about the issues of global sustainability in a hyper casual and most importantly: FUN way!
We aim to bring this conversation to eyelevel with them. Through language, mechanics and logic they are familiar and enjoy engaging with - a video game. Our approach is to introduce this important topic not in an instructive, top-down lesson, but through a playful, interactive experience they can share and cooperate in.
Furthermore, the game is designed with the classroom in mind.
A player can finish a round in about 5-8 Minutes, has easy controls, and offers an explicit feedback-system after each round, so kids can see how well they did, and how they could be more sustainable.
The game is intended to be used as a moderation tool and icebreaker at the beginning of a lesson on sustainability. It could have kids start into class with some lighthearted fun while introducing this heavy topic.
Lastly, we took great care to design this game with a very low threshold.
The game is built with very low technical requirements, so kids should be able to play it even on very old equipment, enabling schools and children with only limited hardware (or very old hardware) to use this software.
Additionally we're currently working on a mobile version to further lower the threshold of playing the game. Being able to play on handheld devices, especially the phones of students, would allow this game to be used without the need of a computer lab or PC.
