In Animal Clinic the player controls a healthcare practitioner tasked to care for his/her patients in the animal clinic.
Animal Clinic was developed entirely during the 48hr "Healthcare Game Jam" (https://www.stiftung-digitale-spielekultur.de/project/healthcare-game-jam/).
The player controls a healthcare practitioner tasked to care for his/her patients in the animal clinic.
You must help the wandering patient(s) with their smaller needs (like being thirsty or in pain) while also working toward their health-goal (the reason they are in the clinic: in our prototype the rabbit-patient has an injured leg and needs to finish his rehabilitation training & exercise schedule to get home). The goal is to care and work towards your patient(s) health-goal(s) until they can be released from hospital. In a later version the game should include managing bigger parts of the hospital, possibly in Co-Op, managing a complex staff and by helping patients become a better hospital, leading to more patients and the game becoming more complex over time.
Goal in terms of the Jam was to make a game that could attract jobseekers and graduates into a career in healthcare. We opted to create a visually attractive game with a very calming sound & visual world to attract our target audience (and younger) into the game. To connect we orientated our appearance to that of "Animal Crossing", since that game has a huge reach (60+ mil), a nearly identical share of female and male players and an average-age-range of roughly 12-40 years (so: connects well with our set audience).
We want to show the attractive side of healthcare-professions through impact. Players caring for patients will get positive feedback from the patients and environment, supposed to instill a feeling of completion and fulfillment in them. We hope to imprint these feelings on players, as to have them happy, enthusiastic, and excited to helping others (and hopefully: real patients!). In addition, we want to mention, that we chose animals as characters, with no focus on their sex, to be as inclusive as possible and avoid stigmatizing real world patient-groups or people.
We have nor had any ambition for this to be an exact simulation of reality, as we deemed a simulation unfit for the given task of the jam: attracting people into the healthcare profession.
