We knew when we started we wanted to make a horror game. And as more people joined and concepts were drawn up, the idea evolved into a doll themed horror, and then the premise turned to family. Our team wanted to challenge the conventional horror that other games did and wanted to delve deeper. We wanted the player to feel trapped and scared yes, but we also wanted the player to be empathetic about our antagonist. The Mother is indeed an antagonist but she is also a figure who deserves empathy and sympathy for what she has gone through, even if her actions say otherwise. Much like a lot of family generational trauma, there's no real villain and there's so much complicated emotions involved. For many immigrants and their children in western spheres, it is common to feel isolated and pressured to assimilate to fit society's standards. Parents, especially, feel pressured to make sure their children doesn't suffer under scrutiny, and do things that aren't good, even if they meant well. This game is to explore that theme and the horror that comes from trauma going unchecked and warping a person beyond recognition.
