In this week's episode of Games from Your Countries, we journey north to "the land of a thousand lakes", Finland. The home of Santa Claus and The GDWC, Finland is famous for saunas, high-quality education, Nokia, and being the happiest country in the world. Finland is also well known in the world of gaming. With massive studios such as Supercell the developers of Clash of Clans, Sulake the developers of Habbo Hotel, Remedy Entertainment the developers of the Alan Wake, Max Payne, and Control, Housemarque the developers behind Returnal, and of course Rovio the developers of the Angry Birds series. Besides big-name studios, Finland has indie games such as Hill Climb Racing, Javelin Masters, and the Lakeview Cabin Collection.

The game list page is an explore page on which you can easily find the types of games you like playing. Narrow down your search using the Search Bar, or by filtering based on Genre, Platform, Monetization, Theme or Player count. With over 350 indie games to choose from there surely is a game for everybody.

In this episode of Games from Your Countries, we journey East to an archipelago of over 7000 islands, Philippines. While the Philippines exports loads of electronics and fruits, they have also published multiple interesting games. Notable games from the Philippines would be the anti-platformer Kill The Plumber and potion shop management game Potion Punch.

Director Olli and Marketing Manager Teea from the GDWC team recently were on the "Real Professional" podcast hosted by Jans, Ted, and Abbey from DreadXP. The Real Professional podcast is a podcast where real professionals from the gaming industry come to have real conversations. They discuss the GDWC, who can enter, how voting works, angry contestants, etc. Besides the GDWC, they discuss various topics such as struggles with throwing controllers and TikTok/YouTube devlogs. There is even a long rant about respectfully giving and receiving criticism.

All games automatically participate in the public ranking. It is formed from two factors: Engagement on the game page such as game page views, likes, and shares, as well as votes on the Game Discovery page. Each month the Top 10 games will be revealed.

The highest-ranked game of each month will be guaranteed a spot in the Fan Choice voting and on the Jury Choice shortlist of any category it's participating in. The rankings are reset each month so it is never too late to participate!

Thomas, a stay-at-home dad, is making a mobile game based on the drawings of his kid, who is on the autism spectrum. It's an infinite runner designed for a younger audience with the goal of teaching spelling while having fun.

In 'Go, Booper, GO!' the player will dodge and jump obstacles to build preset words before time runs out. A second play mode allows players to pick up letters and spell words for points. Thomas tells his kids' drawings seemed to be a natural for making game characters with. And they had filled stacks of sketchbooks with them.

Apotheorasis is a first-person shooter audio-only game; the first of its kind as far as the developer team, Tall Guy Productions knows. While they definitely leveraged the existing "language" of both genres (FPS, audio game), innovation was mandatory to navigate these uncharted waters.

Shooting in an audio-only game in a way that feels both fair and realistic at the same time was a big design challenge. There is a form of aim assist which factors in distance, angle, wanted section difficulty, player speed, and rate of fire to create forgiving yet challenging gameplay, ironed out towards perfection through countless iterations.

The Game Development World Championship (GDWC) is shocked and appalled by the actions of the Russian government in Ukraine.

The values of community and co-operation have always been at the heart of the GDWC. In accordance with these values and together with the global community, the GDWC condemns this attack and extends its support to Ukraine, the Ukrainian people, and the developers and studios affected by this savage and inhumane attack.

Standing together in support of those impacted by this attack is crucial. The International Game Developers Association (IGDA) has collected a great and updating list of resources and ways to support Ukraine. Find it here.

Today we are joined by JJ Shaw to discuss his win at the GDWC Mascot Design Competition, and the winning design titled Jooy. The Mascot Design Competition goal was to find GDWC a mascot that's friendly and funny and represents the fun and creativity of gaming and game development.

According to JJ, his creation, Jooy, was "inspired by the shape of the joystick of the game, and a cool head is designed according to the shape of the joystick." He also used the human figure for expressing competitiveness and the simple blue lines to represent technology.

Can you tell us a little bit about who you are?
"My name is JJ Shaw, and I am 24 years old. I am a designer/artist. I'm from Johor in Malaysia."

How long have you been an artist?
"I have been an artist for 3 years."

Was it always your dream to do art professionally?
"My dream was always to become a game concept artist. After I graduate, I will continue to stick to my passion as a graphic designer."
